New show Solar Superstorms premieres at Planetarium

Solar SuperstormsAdmission is $6 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and children, with all tickets sold at the door.  

Solar Superstorms focuses on violent activity on and below the surface of our Sun. This includes high velocity coronal mass ejections, fiery tsunami waves reaching 100,000 kilometers high, and rising loops of electrified gas. What is causing these phenomena and how do they affect us on the Earth? Solar Superstormsexplores answers by taking viewers into the heart of our closest star. One will see high-resolution views of superhot solar plasma and the tangle of the Sun’s magnetism.   

Solar Superstorms features one of the most intense efforts to visualize the inner workings of the Sun. This includes a series of groundbreaking scientific visualizations computed on the Blue Waters supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.

The show is narrated by actor Benedict Cumberbatch and is a co-production of NCSA’s Advanced Visualization Lab, Thomas Lucas Productions, and Spitz Creative Media.
