Look at that face! Look at that smile!
That’s the smile of a man who worked for 40 years as Managing Director of MTD, one of the longest tenures in the history of mass transit anywhere in the United States of America.
Or maybe he is smiling because he will no longer have to hear about the callers / sub-humans who listen to Penny for your Thoughts and complain about what it means to live in a society, and pitch in for the betterment of the community?
Perhaps he is smiling because he just knows that after 40 years, he’s done his job and done it well, and that the community owes him and his family a debt of gratitude. Believe me, he could have taken just about any job as director of Mass Transit in any city throughout the country.
But he didn’t. He built the MTD into a fully-integrated system, with over 13 million annual riders, and an intermodal transportation center, and one of the best crews of drivers and facilitators anywhere.
We’ll miss ya, Bill Volk.
For those interested in shaking the man’s hand, tonight at 4:00 p.m., you can stop by the Illinois Terminal and give him a pat on the back. Or you can complain about your taxes, if you want too? Your call.
