Heavy Spoon is the ice cream and cereal shop that just opened in Downtown Champaign, in the space formerly occupied by Aroma. Monday through Wednesday the shop opens at 8 a.m., so I thought I would try it out for breakfast last week — I was not disappointed.
Sure, I could have ordered a bowl of cereal (there are dozens of flavors, and several choices for milk). I did not. Instead, I opted for a waffle with vanilla ice cream, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Rolls, bananas, whipped cream, and hot fudge drizzle ($9.75). I felt obligated to commit to the experience, and it was a great, sugary delight.

My spouse ordered a s’mores waffle, and added on Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs (pictured at top; $11.25). His waffle had ice cream, a s’mores Pop-Tart, white chocolate drizzle, whipped cream, mini marshmallows, and graham cracker crumbs.
(Items are charged a la carte: $4.25 for the waffle, ice cream is $2.50, cereal and toppings are $1.50 each.)

There are options for red velvet and chocolate waffles, as well as yogurt parfaits and milkshakes. Sure, you could get a bowl of ice cream or cereal with whatever toppings you want, but I think putting all those toppings on a waffle is more fun.
We both left very full and sugared and satisfied. Treat yourself by checking it out soon. On the weekends, Heavy Spoon is open until 2 a.m., just in case you need something to soften your hangover.
