Emerging Artist at the Y presents:
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 10 from 5–7 p.m.
Murphy Gallery at the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright, Champaign
Corner of Wright & Chalmers
Always a highlight of the Spring and coinciding with the Boneyard Arts Festival, this year’s Emerging Artist show will feature the work of multimedia artist Laura Wennstrom, an MFA candidate in New Media at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Look out for the Y’s Murphy Gallery on the Boneyard Arts Festival map. Then, join us for the opening reception of “Inside/Outside” on Thursday, April 10 — a Boneyard Arts Festival event. “Inside/Outside” features a series of found paper collages entitled “Trauma and Growth” along with surprise window installations in Murphy Gallery. Stay tuned for the installation photo shoot on the University Y’s facebook page.
“Inside/Outside” will feature interactive art workshops and programming including a Re-sew Quilting Bee, Temporary Tattoos and a Collaborative Post-It Note Quilt Mural at Murphy Gallery and at Figure One. For more information about the workshop schedule and more, visit: universityymca.org/art/upcoming.
Additionally, Laura Wennstrom’s new installation piece, Reticulation, has been selected as the 2014 Boneyard Arts Festival Signature Image and will be on display at 312 N. Walnut Street, Champaign.
Artist Statement: “In the process of making art, I am interested in gathering those materials and objects – the cast off, the forgotten, the incidental, the profound – and through combining and layering, I find new ways to tell stories. My art represents the intersection of my life with the people I have worked with while honoring their experiences and trying to make sense of my own. Sometimes this intersection happens within the studio, sometimes this exchange happens outside of the studio with others. I am interested in these spaces and how they inform my practice.”
Laura Wennstrom is currently an MFA student at the U of I School of Art & Design. Laura has worked with children in underserved neighborhoods across the Midwest and in rural Ecuador teaching art, reading, and special education. She has developed and implemented art curriculum for after school programs and art classes for students of all ages. In addition, Laura has created several public murals in collaboration with children and adults from local communities.
Additional Information: “Inside/Outside” will be on view from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays through May 17th, 2014 in the Y’s Murphy Gallery. This exhibition is a part of the Art @ the Y program, an initiative of the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St, Champaign. All Art @ the Y events are free and open to the public.
