Cycling around? You can create a better future for bicycling in C-U

Have you ever wanted to give your opinion about bicycling in our community?  If so, now is your chance!  Complete a travel mode choice survey!

Bicycling is becoming a primary mode of transportation here in C-U. It seems like you see people on bikes everywhere these days.  C-U can now boast that it has two of the six Bicycle Friendly Communities in the State of Illinois — the Cities of Urbana and Champaign, and the only Bicycle Friendly Campus in Illinois — the University of Illinois. There are five Bicycle Friendly Businesses in C-U. All of these were recognized by the League of American Bicyclists in the last few years. http://www.bikeleague.org/bfa/search/map?bfaq=61801

Bicyclists can use bike lanes, bike paths, and bike routes to move around town with ease. Thanks to cooperative efforts, the two cities and the campus are working together to create safer streets that provide infrastructure for all roadway users instead of just cars. A new bicycle map with bike routes, bike lanes, bike paths, bike parking, rules of the road, and safety information was launched this summer. You can see an online version here: http://www.champaigncountybikes.org/

Lots of progress has been made here in the last five years and yet there is still more we can do to achieve the vision created by Champaign County Bikes of making “Champaign County in Illinois the most bicycle friendly county in the Midwest.” This is why the City of Urbana and the Urbana Park District are currently working on their bicycle plans and they need to hear from you! The Urbana Bicycle Master Plan will be a comprehensive update of the 2008 Award-winning Urbana Bicycle Master Plan and will build upon the facilities and programs that were identified in the 2008 Plan. Bicycling is intended to be a safe, efficient, and practical travel option for all Urbana residents and visitors for both recreation and transportation trips.

To aid in these planning efforts Urbana residents are being asked to complete a survey about how you get around for your daily travel, with a focus on how often you bicycle or walk. Even if you never walk or bicycle, they still want to hear from you! The survey will close on September 8, 2013.

Please click here to access the survey. Note that the survey is hosted on the Champaign Urbana Urbanized Area Transportation Study (CUUATS) website.
