Steve Summers has represented County Board District 9 since 2016, and previously served on the Urbana School Board for 16 years. He will be running to replace current County Executive Darlene Kloeppel. She has not yet announced her intentions for the 2022 race.
From the press release:
Summers announced his candidacy because he believes the county government provides vital services for our community, from operating our justice system, to collecting and distributing taxes, to ensuring free and fair elections–but the county also faces a range of issues including aging facilities and a lack of a spirit of collaboration that has made it difficult to tackle current challenges.
He also plans to reduce the salary of the County Executive.
The office was first created in 2018, when then County Clerk Gordy Hulten left his position to pursue it. He was defeated by Kloeppel. She has not always been in agreement with her fellow Democrats on the County Board.
