Cancun, Mexico – Chester Frazier has left his position as video coordinator in order to return to a professional playing career overseas, Illinois head coach Bruce Weber announced Wednesday. Frazier, a former Fighting Illini point guard from 2006–09 who has served in the role of UI video coordinator since August 2010, will return to Germany, where he played during the 2009–10 season. Frazier will play for S.Oliver Baskets in Wurzburg, a team from Germany’s top league. The head coach is John Patrick, who coached Frazier two seasons ago at Gottingen. Frazier is one class away from earning a master’s degree in educational policy studies. He will finish his coursework online next semester and still plans to enter the coaching profession after concluding his playing career.
“I felt like this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Frazier said. “I still have that drive to play and have missed being on the court more than I ever imagined. I can’t wait to get back out there and compete. At the same time, everyone knows I bleed Orange and Blue. I will miss being around the Illinois program on a daily basis. I’ll be staying up late watching all the games just like I did the last time I was in Germany. I want to thank Coach Weber and the staff for all that they’ve done for me, and wish the players all the best this season.”
