According to the News-Gazette, the Champaign Council approved a .25 percent increase in sales tax (raising it to 9 percent) as well as a 6 percent sewer sanitation fee increase. Changes will go in effect January 1, 2014.
The $1.7 million of the projected $2.8 million revenue will go to police, fire, and library services. The rest, according to Mayor Don Gerard, is hoped to be used for “something that’s going to be an investment in the future.” City council members will discuss in the coming weeks how to use that remaining $1.1 million.
