The University of Illinois’s contentious decision to terminate Prof. Steven Salaita’s job before he arrived on campus was settled months ago, but the University continues to face the consequences of its decision.
This past Saturday, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) voted against lifting its censure of the University of Illinois.
In their statements, two delegates from the local AAUP chapter, Prof. Harry Hilton and Prof. Bruce Rosenstock, urged the AAUP to defer the decision to lift censure until next year.
According to Rosenstock, “It would a disservice to our three Campus Senates to essentially discount” work these bodies have done to amend the University’s statutes, which they are undertaking in the hopes of preventing future hiring debacles.
