Those who want to be generous in advance of Valentine’s Day and also want to taste a smattering of some of the more radical local bands around, stop by The Canopy Club this evening for The Vagina Monologues Benefit.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of “V-Day”:http://v10.vday.org/, an organization started by “Eve Ensler”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Ensler, who also wrote the original smash hit The Vagina Monologues. This is one of thousands of events happening world wide from Feb. 1 to Mar. 31, all of which benefit local and international charities designed to help put an end to violence toward women.
This year’s focus is on the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and 10% of all proceeds from these events will go directly to help women from New Orleans rebuild their lives and families.
On the bill are five bands socked into a three-hour show, starting at 6:30 p.m. “Books Died On”:http://www.myspace.com/booksdiedon, the stage moniker for scene newcomer Richard Kentopp, opens the night, followed by a new collaboration between members of “Zmick”:http://www.myspace.com/zmickmusic and “Patrick Mustain”:http://www.myspace.com/patrickmustain, cleverly called Zmustain. “Common Loon”:http://www.myspace.com/commonloon prepares to unleash their first release on us, but only for cool kids: it’s a 7″ record put out by Ideally Utopia, the new imprint owned by Polyvinyl publicist and Bay area resident Seth Hubbard, formerly of Watery Domestic and Colonel Rhodes. Filling in for jigGsaw (who had to cancel for unknown reasons), is “Hotel Ahead”:http://www.myspace.com/hotelahead, featuring Ryan Martin of the band Oceans. Closing out the night is Smile Politely favorite “New Ruins”:http://www.myspace.com/newruins, whose new album is being eagerly awaited by all of us and even some in Sweden, where Hidden Agenda Records maintains a steady following.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show ends at 9:30 p.m. $7 donation at the door.
