Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson makes his way through to Canopy Club on Thursday night this week. He released Living For A Song about a year ago, which is a tribute record to Hank Cochran and features a variety of artists.

Bloomington-Normal singer-songwriter Dan Hubbard is performing solo in Champaign this week in support of his latest record, Livin’ in the Heartland. He has performed in C-U before, typically with this band The Humadors. This time around, it’ll be a two hour set with Hubbard solo. Elsinore’s Ryan Groff will be performing solo at Cream & Flutter in Downtown Champaign on Friday evening. Just a week away from the band’s release of their new album, PUSH / PULL, you can bet he’ll be previewing some songs that are on that record. We’ll take a closer look at the album later this week, so be on the lookout for that in anticipation of this show on Friday night.

A handful of hardcore and punk bands lined up at Error Records on Friday. Falter released a new album earlier this year called Descent, which you can check out over at their Bandcamp page. Parasitic Twins hail from Indiana, and Unnerve and Gnargoyle are local punk outfits, and Gnargoyle is a a newer band around these parts.

Ezra Furman makes his way back through Champaign-Urbana after performing here last year at the Highdive. He was out on the road in support of his album The Year of No Returning. This time, he’s with his new band The Boy-Friends, and his new album Day of the Dog was just released today. He’s joined by local alt-country dudes The Fights, as well as Joy Division cover band The Unknown Pleasures.

Todd Snider is joined by the Coal Men on Friday night at the Canopy Club. He’s on his Without Shoes tour at the moment, and as you can see, he doesn’t have shoes on in the photo. Fitting. Pretty cool combination of music and a documentary screening at Error Records this weekend. C-U’s David Gracon is screening his documentary, Walls of Sound — A Look Inside the House of Records, prior to the bands performing. Full disclosure: Gracon was a professor of mine, and a good friend. I’ve seen the documentary a few times, and I highly recommend checking it out. You can see the trailor below to get an idea of what the film is about. In addition, there are some awesome bands lined up, including locals Kowabunga! Kid, who just released a new EP, Feuding Feathers, Ex-Bombers and Capys. A bunch of cool acts and a film all for only $5. You can pick up copies of the documentary there when you’re there.
