The Overture: June 28–July 4

I’d like to take a moment to recognize all the house venues in town. The last shows at Geppetto’s Workshop are tonight, and BASIC House ends on the third. Additionally, Dan Akroyd’s will have their last show later this month after an almost four-year run of hosting shows from hundreds of bands including Native, the Reptilian and Weekend Nachos.

WHAT: That’s No Moon, Greenwood, Sophie Crane, the Spacepimps

WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)

WHEN: Tuesday, June 28th at 6:00 p.m.

That’s No Moon have made a name for themselves over the past year by relentlessly playing around downtown Champaign, but now they’ll bring their infectious brand of dance-rock to Urbana. Locals Sophie Crane, Decatur veterans Greenwood and Pennsylvanian group the Spacepimps support.

WHAT: Tone Cluster Concert with Hi-Ho Buffalo, Barry Morse, Bill Denkov, Jason Finkelman

WHERE: IMC ($5)

WHEN: Friday, July 1st at 7:30 p.m.

This night of experimental music features local staple Jason Finkelman along with some new faces in Barry Morse and Bill Denkov. Bizzarely enough, local country group Hi-Ho Buffalo will also perform, and all of the artists will collaborate with each other. Show up with an open mind, as the IMC is one of the best venues in town for experimental music.

WHAT: The Fresh Kills, Cain & Abels, Forgottonia Secedes

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, July 2nd at 9:00 p.m.

You can’t say this show doesn’t have local relevance: Forgottonia Secedes is a new project from Take Care’s Kyle Scott, and the Fresh Kills play what may be their last show under that name. Also on the bill is Chicago acoustic group Cain & Abels.

WHAT: Delta Kings

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Sunday, July 3rd at 9:00 p.m.

Well, it isn’t Peace Beach (or Hum) this year, but Delta Kings guitarist Matt Stewart was still in Starcastle, damnit. For real though, the weather is probably going to be gorgeous, and the Delta Kings are a great band.

WHAT: Freedom, Bald Eagles, Grilling of meats

WHERE: America (FREE)

WHEN: Monday, July 4th at 12:00 a.m.
