WHAT: Kentucky Knife Fight, The Texas Funerals
WHERE: Iron Post ($TBA)
WHEN: Tuesday, July 20th at 8 p.m.
Sorry, but there was no way I couldn’t put this in the Overture after seeing that name. Kentucky Knife Fight are a garage-country band (think Gogol Bordello scoring O Brother, Where Art Thou? out of St. Louis. They list Murder City Devils, mistakes, and shiny things in their MySpace interests, and the music is pretty solid as well. Should be a fun show for a rainy night at the Post.
WHAT: Central Illinois Metalfest
WHERE: Canopy Club ($25 one day / $45 both)
WHEN: Thursday, July 22nd 7 p.m.
Did you know that the Canopy Club hosts one of the pre-eminent celebrations of death/black metal in the world? They’ve previously scored major acts such as Immolation and Goatwhore, and that trend continues this year with performances by Malevolent Creation and Origin. Music kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a pre-party at 7 p.m. on Thursday night, which carries a cheap-o cover of $7.
WHAT: Take Care, Rusalka, Nordic Summer, Panel Van
WHERE: Post Office (in Mahomet, free/donations)
WHEN: Friday, July 23rd at 6:30 p.m.
Turns out that Mahomet and the various smaller communities surrounding Champaign-Urbana have some pretty great music as well. While Dewey venue the Shed closing up was a bit of a blow, the post office in Mahomet is starting to get some excellent DIY stuff. Plus, it’s always nice seeing bands from C-U getting billed with non-locals.
WHAT: Eva Hunter
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, July 24th at 8:30 p.m.
The singer/songwriter from Bloomington-Normal will play a full band set in the beer garden at 10 p.m., with an opener TBA. We’re hoping someone from the MetalFest wanders over and sits in.
WHAT: The Last Massacre with Positive Vibr8tions, Mertz, DJ Belly, The Ruckus, Lincoln Jones, White Rabbit, Otacon, ISM, Harsh, AMS
WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, July 24 at 10 p.m.
Don’t freak out — this isn’t actually the last Massacre. They’re just moving to a bigger venue starting in August. But considering as how Cowboy Monkey has been DM’s home base, this promises to be a going-away party like no other.
