Illinois rock and roll legends Cheap Trick and Styx shared the stage at Grange Grove this past weekend, performing at the venue’s inaugural concert. Under nearly perfect summer weather conditions, over 3,000 fans enjoyed the three-plus hour show. Rockford natives Cheap Trick performed their set first, treating the audience to some new songs from their latest release Bang Zoom Crazy Hello, along with a nice assortment of many of their classic hits. Styx took the back half of the show, taking the stage around 9 p.m. In addition to performing many of the hit songs they have amassed over the years, the Chicago rockers also paid tribute to David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, and Prince during their set.
The show went off seemingly without a hitch, and everyone appeared to leave both happy and satisfied. The U of I promises more great shows at the new Grange Grove venue in the not too distant future. But there can only be one opening celebration! And what a night it was…
