Get in the spooky mood this month with some Halloween music

There’s no denying, October is the best month of the year. I simply won’t humor any arguments otherwise. Chilly weather, chili weather, and of course, Halloween. With the spooky season comes some fun activities, including some great musical ways to get into the Halloween spirit. Here are a few ways you can celebrate the Big Spook this month.

It’s still early in the month, so if we missed something, or you know of another spooky show in the works, email us at music@smilepolitely.com with the details.

A Halloween party at Boomerangs Bar and Grill

At 8 p.m. on Friday, October 28th, Ancient Ways will be hosting a party at Boomerangs — stylized as BOOmerangs for this show. The band will be playing a set and New Souls will be opening up the evening with some tunes. Ancient Ways released a new EP in June, titled In Disguise, which has a great nostalgic, classic rock feel, but also blends metal and grunge.

How about some horror-hop?

A genre I can’t say I’ve ever really heard before, Johnny Cashed has just released a new horror themed hip-hop album. 13 spooky-themed songs with titles like “Zombie Sunglasses,” “Calling On All Pumpkins,” “I Don’t Smoke On Halloween,” and more ghoulishly fun songs. This is just an all around fun album full of humor and dark imagery. Maybe throw it on at a party, it’s sure to be a hit.

A scary good DJ set at Bentley’s Pub

DJ “Necrotic” Nico Haulde will be spinning some devilishly good tunes on on vinyl on Saturday, October 29th. From 10 p.m. until 2 a.m., come hangout, have a drink, and dance — costumes are encouraged. You must be 21 years or older to attend.

A costume contest, a fire show, and more

On Sunday, October 30th, The Darkness Underground is throwing a big ole Halloween party at the Rose Bowl, complete with a costume contest, a belly dancing and poi (fire) show, food trucks, and vendors. DJs will be spinning tunes all night to keep the party going. The Darkness Underground is know for throwing spooky and “dark-themed” events around town. They host Bat Factory on the last Thursday of every month, a dance party for goths and emos. The party starts at 6 p.m. and goes until midnight.

A Halloween night rock show

Hard rock band Drew Cagle & The Reputation is hosting a show on Halloween night at NOLA’s. With their latest album appropriately titled Haunted, the band plays original songs in an 80s, classic rock style, a la Guns and Roses, AC/DC, Journey, etc. Joining them for the show is Ty from The Unemployed Architects, a group based out of Pontiac, Illinois. The show begins at 8 p.m., with a $10 advanced cover charge, $15 at the door.

A bonus, somewhat Halloween related show

Okay, while this show isn’t specifically Halloween related, heavy metal, grunge, punk, and hardcore have a very dark vibe that pairs perfectly with October and Halloween. Head to the Brass Rail on Sunday, October 23rd at 7 p.m. for a free show from Nequient, Power of Dusk, J.U.G., and Death Call. This will be a kick-butt show, so I’m throwing it in the loop.
