Moment Bakery: A place to get homemade Asian-style pastries

If you ask me what place I visit every week in additional to grocery store, it’s definitely Moment Bakery. Owned by a pastry chef and her husband, this bakery is what I can call a hidden gem on Green Street.

The bakery is located right next to Fyxit Tech & Repair, and you can easily miss Moment Bakery if you don’t know there was indeed a bakery next door. During this pandemic time, you can only do carryout due to the limit of labor in the bakery. However, that doesn’t stop people from going there and bringing home some baked goods since they are all so delicious to enjoy.

As always, I love pastries with the appropriate level of sweetness, and Moment bakery definitely nail this. You can get different kinds of cheesecakes, mousse cakes, toasts, and even Chinese pastries. Chef Vicky is talented in designing all kinds of pastries with seasonal fruits, and you will get surprised every time how the cakes made with lychee, grapes, or rose can taste so good. In this article, I will review a couple of items I’ve tried recently on their menu.

The first thing I tried was this matcha cake with red beans ($7). The matcha flavor cream was light and not overwhelming. The cake itself was also matcha flavor which really gives a matcha lover a double joy. I loved the sweet red beans added to the cake. It gave a different texture and sweetness to the pastry with every bite. This was a really large piece of cake, so I would say it was worth the price.

The cake that I loved the most among all the baked goods was this Oreo cake in a box ($7.50). Oreo fans like me just can’t resist this cake with layers of Chiffon cakes with layers of Oreo flavor cream in between. There are also these crunchy Orea cookies crush between the cake layers and on top of it. It gives really nice and combine texture while the sweetness is just not too much at all. The chiffon cake was soft and fantastic with the layered design. If you’re only going to try one thing at Moment Bakery, try their cake in a box!

If you ever know about papparoti coffee buns, you know how delicious they can be. When I mean the pastry chef can always surprise you, I mean it after trying out their freshly baked papparoti coffee buns ($3.50). The papparoti bun was a soft bun with an outer coffee crust with coffee icing and butter inside. I like to reheat it a bit before enjoying the bun. The coffee crush was delicate in texture with the light sweet butter inside. I will never get tired of having it every day for my breakfast.

I also love the toast from Moment Bakery. You can purchase the whole loaf or just a half portion of it. The price of different kind of toasts vary from $8 to $9, depending on the flavors. I liked the one with pork floss and scallion the most. The toasts are freshly baked every day at 3 p.m. and enjoying a piece of these toasts makes my day. There are also other flavors of toast with taro paste, red bean paste, or raisin.

Moment Bakery also takes cake orders for different occasions two days in advance. You can customize the designs and the flavors, both for the filling and the decoration of the cake. I ordered this special guinea pig cake ($35) for celebrating the birthday of my pet Buddy, and it came out so nice. Cake orders can be made by contacting the store directly  on the phone at 217-954-0197. Prices of cakes vary depending on the size and the customization of them.

The filling was Oreo cream, and I specifically asked for the guinea pig design of the cake. I sent the chef a photo of what I expected the cake would look like, and she made it happen!

It was a chiffon cake with Oreo cream. The cake was super soft, and the light cream mixed with crushed Oreos made my family enjoy it so much. The chef nailed the likenesss I think, and I loved the cake so much.

Next time when walking by Fyxit, do not forgot to drop by the nice bakery next door, and you’ll not regret it.
