With only five Markets left this year, it couldn’t be a better season or weekend to visit the corner of Illinois and Vine streets in Urbana. With perfect weather in the forecast and probably one of your last chances to get summer’s finest fruits and vegetables including heirloom tomatoes, beans, watermelon, corn and peaches, it would be a shame to let another Saturday morning pass you by. As always there is sure to be plenty of salad greens, basil, herbs, flowers, peppers, zucchini, summer squash and cucumbers, but as an added cross-season bonus, the acorn squash, pumpkins and other cool-weather root vegetables are starting to crop up.
In other news, the folks at First Fruits Farm are now taking orders for Thanksgiving turkeys, and you can sign up for one at their stand along Illinois street. As Lisa, the market director, points out on her blog, October brings a host of activities starting with the Second Annual Bicycle Rodeo this Saturday. C-U Safe Routes To School will be at the market from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. promoting safety and biking skills for kids, so bike on over to the Market to participate.
The Market on the Square runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon, rain or shine now through November 8th. It is located in the parking lot of Urbana Square Mall on the corners of Vine and Illinois Streets.
