Spring is here?
You wouldn’t know it by looking outside, but not only does the time change this Sunday at 2 a.m., the cities of Champaign and Urbana both let out a collective “Yeah!” by the news that beloved frozen treat makers Jarling’s Custard Cup re-opened for business today.
Originally started in Danville 1949, the company expanded to open its Champaign location in 1983 and the crowds have been flocking ever since.
Flanked by snow, the entrance was being lined with salt at around 11 a.m., as 13-year-strong employee Sarah Allen was hard at work at the custard machines, preparing to stock enough of the tasty sub-zero delight to handle the initial annual crowds.
“We made all the pies and cakes yesterday,” Allen said, as she kept scraping away at the custard. “In all, we’ll have roughly 48 gallons of custard when we open today.”
The custard stand serves up four basic flavors: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and lemon. From there, customers can create a “snowstorm” with all sorts of toppings, not dissimilar to a Blizzard at Dairy Queen, but a whole hell of a lot better. And with classic homemade waffle cones and bowls, as well as the most traditional of all fountain drinks, the Green River, Custard Cup on Kirby Ave. has stood the test of time as one of the most beloved places in the area.
So, hit the gym more than once today. That peanut butter fudge snowstorm will be well worth it.
Custard Cup is located at 309 W. Kirby Ave in the Hessel Park neighborhood.
