I’m certain I’ve written this exact same post at some point in the near past, so you’re not experiencing deja vu. But I recently had a slice of tres leches for the first time in a minute, and was reminded that it’s damn delicious. Rick’s cakes are super affordable, too, so I would not judge you if you were to, say, order an entire cake and invite two friends over to eat it. ELLNORA, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, prices and times vary all weekend
Krannert Center’s incredible guitar festival (that takes place every other day) is happening this weekend. You should make some time in your weekend to check out a show or two, and check out Austin’s preview article to get a handle on what the programming looks like this year. (PS)
Sustainable Student Farm Open House, 3505 Lincoln Ave., 3-6 pm., free
The Sustainable Student Farm provides fresh locally grown food to the U of I residence halls. Sample some of the dishes made by dining services, tour the farm, and see a presention on making sustainable paper. For some background on the farm, check out this article from last spring. (JM)
Grand Re-Opening, University of Illinois Ice Arena, 7:30-9:30 p.m., free
The newly renovated U of I Ice Arena reopens at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. The event features free admission and skate rental and food from Jimmy John’s and Insomniac Cookies. Come check out the new lighting and flooring and skate the rust off your blades. (DT)
SATURDAY, September 16th
CU PrideFest and Parade, Downtown Champaign, noon-6 p.m., free
National Pride month happened at the beginning of the summer, but C-U Pride is happening this weekend, because students. The whole weekend is filled with events, which you can find out about here, but Saturday is a day long family-friendly party. Bring the kids to the family zone for bounces houses, bubbles, a petting zoo, and more, enjoy tons of vendors, and stay for the parade that steps off at 4 p.m. from the corner of Main and Walnut. Green Meadow Farm Tasting, Common Ground Food Co-Op, 2 p.m.-8 p.m., free
Head to the Common Ground Food Co-Op at the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana to sample goat cheese, goat yogurt (goat-gurt?), and goat milk from Arthur, IL’s Green Meadow Farms. It’s a great opportunity to try something you maybe haven’t had before. (DT)
Strand of Oaks, Jason Anderson, Cowboy Monkey, $10, 10 p.m.
Strand of Oaks return to Champaign-Urbana after a couple of stops through over the last few years, one being at PYGMALION in 2015. They’re touring in support of their new record, Hard Love, which came out earlier this year. Take a listen on your platform of choosing, and spend some time Downtown this weekend for this one. (PS)
SUNDAY, September 17th
Brunch at Black Dog, Champaign location, 10 a.m., about $15 per person
Black Dog recently announced it will be offering brunch every Sunday this fall, and why not take advantage? Brunch menu items are served from 10 a.m. until they’re gone, which could be 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. (though I’d guess they run out earlier). Grandkids return to Champaign-Urbana for a performance at Blips and Chitz, benefiting presented by by Girls Rock! C-U and Undercut Collective. Remember when they released Timeshare a few years ago? Their last record, This Guitars, is yours to stream as well. (PS)
