FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26
Go scavenge local thrift stores for hilarious Halloween costumes — Goodwill, Salvation Army, others, maybe spend $10 total
This seems to happen to me every single year. I end up waiting until the last minute to figure out what stupid outfit I am going to put together for the most annoying/amusing holiday of the calendar year. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you dress up as, simple or complicated. Just as long as it looks like you’re trying to pull something off and it’s at least moderately humorous, then you should be in the clear. If worse comes to worst, put a sheet on your head and call yourself a ghost. (PS)
LGBTQ Youth Halloween Dance, The UP Center, 7:00–10:00 p.m., free
The UP Center of Champaign County is hosting a Halloween Party for youth “who need a safe space to be themselves while having a ghoul of a time.”
Admission is free. Bring a friend; bring a date. This party is for teens, ages 15–18, and is only for those who are still in that godforsaken wasteland called “high school.” All teens who fit that criteria are welcome, because that’s how the UP Center rolls. (TN)
A Dream Play, Krannert Center Studio Theatre, Friday–Saturday, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, 3:00 p.m.
August Strindberg’s A Dream Play was written in 1901, and represents an “ever-shifting dream reality in which characters have representational meanings, time moves backward and forward, and locations dissolve and rematerialize.” This play is being directed by Chicago’s Max Truax.
On Saturday, you’re invited to stay for a free talkback in the theatre after the play.
And look for our review of this play next week! (TN)
Psychic Joker’s Week of Wickedness, Chapter II, 8:00–10:00 p.m., ticket prices vary
Psychic Joker is hosting another fantastic Halloween celebration, and it sounds like a lot more fun than this one. They’re having a large variety of entertainment (most appropriate for ages 18+) throughout the week leading up to Halloween, and you can read all the details by clicking the link above or by going here. The Impalas Birthday Celebration, Bentley’s Pub, 9:00 p.m.–1:00 a.m.
It’s Dawna Nelson’s birthday, and — because she’s clearly the coolest woman in the world — she’s hosting a party that will benefit the Greater Community AIDS Project. (TN)
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27
Immigrant Rights — Worker Rights … What’s the Connection?, 2:00–5:00 p.m.
East Central Illinois Jobs with Justice has organized a workshop that highlights the Immokalee, a group of migrant workers who “successfully overcame modern-day slavery in the agricultural fields of the U.S. by taking on major fast-food restaurant and food service chains.” Ricky Baldwin, will facilitate this presentation. (TN)
The Dirty Feathers’ Night of the Living Dead with The Uglies and Love Toy — Cowboy Monkey, $5, 10 p.m.
I just so happened to catch this same type of show last year when I decided to piss off any and all Cubs fans with a Steve Bartman Halloween costume. Although last year was pretty spooky and psychadelic with Troubador Dali and The Dirty Feathers leading the way on that one, this should size up quite nicely. Who knows what type of antics have stirred up this year? But no matter what tricks they have in store, they bring the treats with some great music. So go ahead, dress up like an idiot like the rest of the people on Halloween weekend and enjoy yourself some music. Here’s hoping that “Be Forewarned” is as evil as it usually is on Saturday night. (PS)
New Talent Spotlight, Emerald City Lounge, 10:00 p.m.
