After a long and cold week, why unwind and warm up with some local pizza and brews? You can pick up your pizza pie(s) from Pizza M and head to Triptych for some beer. Since Tiptych doesn’t serve any food, they allow you to bring in your own. Think of it as a progressive dinner party. (JH)

In a week with a couple of awesome Thursday night shows with Santah at Mike ‘N Molly’s and The Life and Times at Cowboy Monkey, there are more this weekend. Aside from Grandkids and that crew playing over at Mike ‘N Molly’s on Saturday night, this is your Friday night show this weekend. I saw Troubadour Dali slay spectators at MNM’s last summer—and I’m not overstating that. It was one of the better shows I saw in C-U that summer. Being a huge fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club—rather, decendents of Jesus and Mary Chain, bands of that nature—Troubadour Dali is legit. Listen to Let’s Make It Right a couple of times and you can be the judge. Hell, I didn’t even mention the other bands on the bill. You can find out for yourself Friday night. (PS)
THE TEMPEST, Krannert Center, 7:30 p.m.
William Shakespeare’s engrossing fantasy The Tempest tells the story of Prospero (played by Henson Keys), deposed Duke of Milan, who has exploited the inhabitants and resources of the mystical island where he has found refuge. As he prepares to exact revenge on those who wronged him, a timeless lesson on the small and large details of human becoming unfolds. A tale of magic, romance, family strife, and honor, this production of The Tempest features a bevy of local talent (including Mark E. Fox, Christopher Terrell Brown, Ellen Fred, Thom Miller, Sidney Germaine, and Ryan Jenkins) and directed by Robert G. Anderson, this play is sure to dazzle and delight. (MG)
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26
Tailgating for Illinois Homecoming, and maybe go to the game vs. Michigan State—maybe, Memorial Stadium, 9 a.m.
As an Illinois alum, this is one of my favorite times of the year. A ton of friends back in town that aren’t around C-U anymore, plus football, plus food and beer, plus fall weather. It’s a winning combination in my book. Sure, the football team is just OK. Just OK, I said. They’ve had their ups and down, so no one would really blame you if you didn’t go into the game and decided to stick around your tailgating area, or hop around to others during the game. This is a 2:30 p.m. gametime start, so getting going anytime between 9–11 a.m. is pretty acceptable. Fire up your grills for burgers and brats, get the finger foods ready, and ice in those coolers. I know I’ll be out there, and I would imagine a lot of you will be, too. (PS)
Rebecca, The Virginia Theatre, 1 p.m. & 7 p.m., $6
The Virginia Theatre is kicking off its “5 Nights of Hitch” event with Hitchcock’s eerie 1940 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel. This is the perfect film to get you in the mood for a spooky Halloween. (RP)
Love Your Pet: Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy for Pets, Common Ground Food Co-op, Lincoln Square Mall, Urbana, 2-4 p.m., $7 members/$12 non-members
Surely you’ve seen the endless television ads about pet food. Corn gluten? Chicken by-product meal? Penny Watkins-Zdrojewski will lead this lecture/discussion and cover topics including commerical food, how to read pet food nutritional labels, and changing nutritional needs as your pet ages. For many of us, pets are people, too. (JH)
Orange You, indi-go Artist Co Op, Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m., free
As the first part of the r e d o u b l e series, Orange You sets out to demonstrate and contemplate movement in both the physical and mental realms. r e d o u b l e artist Jessie Young choreographs the series, which will be performed Saturday and Sunday nights at 7 p.m.
Grandkids, Sunjacket, Sleepcomesdown, The Fights, Mike ‘N Molly’s, 9 p.m., $7
Grandkids return to C-U to play a show at Mike ‘N Molly’s Saturday night. Opening bands are Sunjacket, Sleepcomesdown, and local band The Fights. Bands start playing around 9 p.m., but come out early for a drink beforehand. (JK)
Nick Offerman’s AMERICAN HAM Tour, Krannert Center, 7:30 p.m.
University of Illinois alum Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson) is taking full advantage of his honey-glazed hindquarters in a humorous entree called American Ham, which features a veritable smorgasbord of cautionary tales, tunes, and tips for prosperity (with minor nudity). This presentation, aside from being a guaranteed good time, is also a fundraiser for Japan House. (MG)
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27
After Tiller + Panel, The Art Theater Co-op, 7 p.m., $9 or $7 for students
As part of its “Dangerous Documentaries” series, the Art Theater is screening After Tiller, an acclaimed documentary about some of the few doctors left in the country willing to provide third-trimester abortions for women. Following this screening, a post-show panel will respond to the film. The panelists are:
- Lena Hann, Clinical Instructor, Department of Kinesiology and Community Health
- Heather Ault, MFA Artist and “4000 Years of Choice” founder
- Carol Ammons, state representative candidate
- Diana Onken, NARAL Pro-Choice America
