Weekender: March 4-6

FRIDAY, March 4th

Jambalaya boudin lunch, bacaro, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or sold out, $15

This week’s lunch features flavors of the south — the Cajun south, that is. As we wave goodbye to February and look forward to spring, I can think of fewer ways to welcome warmer weather and increased happiness than a tasty sandwich featuring robust seasoning and fancy sausage. Mad Max: Fury Road, The Art Theatre, 10 pm, $8

If you watched The Oscars, and you’re like me, you were probably wondering what all the hubbub was about this Mad Max fella and why did he win so many awards. Well, good news for us pop culture degenerates like myself, The Art is showing it on the big screen this Friday night, so we can all play catch-up. (BH)

The Round Table: Illinois State Budget Impasse, The Accord (51 E. Main St., Champaign), doors at 5 p.m., conversation at 6 p.m., free

The Victory Lap: Justin vs. Justin, The Accord, 10 p.m., free, 19+

Finally – the battle we’ve all been waiting for – Justin Timberlake vs. Justin Bieber. Seriously, though, is there a better way to round out your Friday night (Unofficial night, alternatively) than with a constant rotation of pop hit bangers? No. There’s not. Plus it’s free. (BH)

SATURDAY, March 5th

Watch Home movie for $1, Savoy 16 Goodrich Theater, 10 a.m., $1

Home movie is a cute little animated flick about a girl on a quest who meets an alien. For $1 this is a fun, family friendly event that you can fill your Saturday morning with. So go to the theater, eat popcorn for breakfast and enjoy the steller animations of Home. Click here for trailer and more. (SL)

She Kills Monsters, The Station Theatre, 8 p.m., $15

It’s closing night for the production that’s half D&D campaign, half soul-searching play, with a generous portion of 90s nostalgia and tweenage wish-fulfillment. While all the actors are professionals, there’s also an energy about closing night that can sometimes turn things up to 11, which would be something to see. But even if not, this show’s 10 is pretty darn fun.  (RK)

Motes with Deer Tracks, Charles Roberts, and KrelboyneMike N Molly’s, 8:30 p.m., $7

Coming to us from Grand Rapids, Michigan, shoegaze group Deer Tracks will be playing some of their sunny dream pop music for us on Saturday night over at Mike N Molly’s. Check out their new single – “Soft Dreams (Radio Edit)”. That’s right, RADIO edit, that means their music is good enough to be transmitted across the sky using invisible waves. (JK)

SUNDAY, March 6th

Breakfast at Huaraches Moroleon, 8 a.m., about $8 per person

About a year ago I reviewed the breakfast at Huaraches, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Those chilaquiles? Yum. There are also American favorites like pancakes. Sometimes you just need a little spicy in your life, or some flavor to kick start your day. Photo by Jessica Hammie. (JH)

Almost “A” Quintet In Concert, Champaign Public Library, 2 p.m., FREE

Violinist Dorothy Martirano and her talented group of flexible size will be making an appearance in their largest form. Their particular style never settles on a single genre, instead jumping from jazz to Gypsy and ranging from Russian folk to traditional favorites, but regardless of what they’re playing, it always sounds amazing. (RK)

Taste of Terroir Wine Tasting, Big Grove Tavern, 3 p.m., $35

Todd of Art Mart has selected a sampling of whites and reds, and moderator Sean O’Hare, a distributor that specializes in French wines, will be at Big Grove Tavern on Sunday for a three-flight tasting.
