Smile Politely

Weekender: July 13–15

FRIDAY, JULY 13

Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago’s Union Park, all weekend, starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday

Not the most local event of the weekend by any stretch of the imagination, but what the hell. We’re going to be there enjoying the festival. And I’d imagine that there are a lot of central Illinoisans that will be there as well. I wrote a pretty lengthy breakdown of the schedule and some noteworthy acts playing this year. The festival runs all weekend, including performances from Feist, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and many more. Some of the days are sold out, but there are tickets out there if you look hard enough. Trying to get off the CTA without being pestered by people selling tickets is an impossibility, so you always have that option. (PS)

Rent, the Station Theatre, Friday–Sunday, 8:00–11:00 p.m.

Rent, Jonathan Larson’s musical based on Puccini’s La bohème, won the Tony for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This production is directed by  Mikel Matthews Jr., with musical direction by Alex Zelck Smith.

Opening night is already sold out, but you can make a reservation for future dates on the Station’s website or by calling (217) 384-4000.

SATURDAY, JULY 14

Smile Politely Show Series: Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration, Mike ‘N Molly’s starting at 8 p.m., $8

Here we are, three shows into the Smile Politely Show Series and we’re proud to be presenting this one at Mike ‘N Molly’s on Saturday night. The CU Folk & Roots Festival has lined up a whole slew of local singer-songwriters to celebrate one of the best songwriters of all time in Woody Guthrie. He would be 100 years old on Saturday, so head over there to celebrate some classic tunes that the musicians will be covering throughout the evening.

Our staff will be there with some swag to give away and you can bother them about the magazine if you want, or enjoy the beer garden on what should be a pretty pleasent weekend weather-wise in C-U. (PS)

SUNDAY, JULY 15

The Twin City Derby Girls, Skateland, 7:00 p.m., $8 advance/$10 door

The ‘Paign will play the Damagin’ Dames at 7:00 p.m., and a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit R.A.C.E.S., TCDG’s charity partner for the 2012 Season.

You can order tickets online here. And check back with Smile Politely next week for Meghan’s recap of the bout. (TN)
