Here’s an opportunity to check out Broadway Food Hall’s options on Friday. They’re doing a lunch tasting for $12, and a $15 dinner tasting. Here’s what they are offering from their restaurants:
La Royale – Egg Sandwich or Double Cheeseburger
Sunny’s – Summer Salad
Nation – East Coast Pastrami Sandwich
Muchacho – Chicken Fried Rice Bowl
King Kuma – Classic Poke Bowl

Visit Champaign County’s Restaurant Week kicks off today and continues through February 3rd. We previewed the menus, offered suggestions, and we’ll have a bunch of reviews for you early next week. The event includes a whole bunch of restaurants in C-U and surrounding communities, with plenty of cuisine options. SATURDAY, January 27th
Illini Railroad Club Open House, Townsend Hall, 1-7 p.m., free
Did you know there has been a 300 square foot model train layout in Townsend Hall (part of Illinois Street Residence Halls) for the past 40 years? Now, it’s about to be dismantled to accommodate renovations. The Illini Railroad Club is hosting a “last run” open house so the community can it check out before it’s gone. It’s free and kid-friendly. (JM)
Sample Epic Grilled Cheese, Harvest Market, 5 to 7 p.m., $7
Attend Harvest Market’s Epic Grilled Cheese event and sample four different kinds of grilled cheese, as well as house made chips. There’ll also be a cheesemonger on site and available to answer any questions you might have. Stop by and sample, or you can add a tomato soup and select beers and cocktails to your experience to make it a full meal. (KF)

Marathon, Edna, Tuesday Lovelies, Ode Vinter, Ex Cathedra, Urbana Champaign IMC, 7:30 p.m., free
Here’s a DIY show for you to look at this weekend, with an incredible poster to join it. Marathon is headlining, they’re a pretty rad progressive local, mixed with some heavier shit throughout like Ode Vinter and Ex-Cathedra. (PS)
Celebrate Mozart’s Birthday, Krannert Center, 7:30 p.m., $10/ticket
Attend the UI Symphony Orchestra’s celebration of Mozart’s birthday, where they will play selections from the Marriage of Figaro, the Magic Flute, and Don Giovanni, amongst others. Even if classical music isn’t normally your thing, tickets are only $10 and it might be fun to change up your date night activities. (KF)
Neko Case, Mt. Joy, The Castle Theatre, 8 p.m.
Although this show is sold out, Castle Theatre is bringing it lately. It has been a few years since Neko Case performed at Canopy Club, and a few years after, performed with New Pornographers in the same room. So, you have some catching up to do if you missed both of those. (PS)
SUNDAY, January 28th
Do some time travel, Spurlock Museum, 1 to 3:30 p.m., free (suggested donation of $3)
The Spurlock’s family-friendly Time Machine programming will focus on Ancient Rome. It’s very cool to think back on your life and identify the moments and situations that had a lasting effect. Looking at art, reading about history, and visiting museums were some my most influential experiences — I can trace a line from those early encounters to my undergraduate thesis on the development of liturgical architecture in ancient Rome. Perhaps your children will go on to become historians, or artists, or perhaps they will simply start to develop a sense that history tends to repeat itself, and people across geography and cultures share a myriad of traits. I paid a visit to Triptych last weekend, and it’s always good. I drank this beer there, pictured, AJ’s with Coffee, and I suggest you do the same.

Soul on Sunday, The Iron Post, 7-9 p.m., $5 cover
About a year ago I paid my first visit to The Iron Post, and it was to watch a friend perform at Soul on Sunday. It was powerful, inspirational, and I’m kind of irritated with myself that I haven’t gone back. See all sorts of local talent share their poetry, spoken word, music and more, and your $5 cover is a donation to Salt and Light. (JM)
