WHAT: Genderism Webinar: Transgender Students and Binary Systems

WHERE: Asian American Cultural Center

Webinar based on the book, Genderism: Transgender Students, Binary Systems and Higher Education (Bilodeau, 2009). This webinar will explore a two year, dual campus study, which resulted in positing a definition and characteristics of genderism. This systemic, binary oppression framework permeated campus life, and was examined in-depth through the lives of ten transgender students. The webinar speakers will discuss a research-driven framework for understanding genderism, examination of its primary impact areas on campus, and implications for practice.

A film screening and discussion about the film Out in the Silence. This documentary follows the story of a small American town that is confronting a firestorm of controversy ignited by a same-sex wedding announcement in the local newspaper. Out in the Silence illustrates the challenges of being an outsider in a conservative, rural community and the change that is possible when courageous people break the silence and search for common ground.

GEO is the Graduate Employees’ Organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. HomoSocial, happens every first Monday at the Clark Bar in downtown Champaign. This month’s event is a general fundraiser for future HomoSocial events.
