Spotlight on a Cause:

Champaign County Triad/S.A.L.T. Council

The Champaign County Triad/S.A.L.T. Council is a cooperative effort between local law enforcement agencies and the senior citizens residing in Champaign County. The Council advises law enforcement to issues most affecting seniors. Their goal is to reduce crime through implementing effective crime prevention and educational programs for seniors and all residents of Champaign County. The Triad/S.A.L.T. Council holds meetings on the second Wednesday of alternating months at 10:00 a.m. at Metcad in Urbana. Meetings are held open to the public, especially to seniors who are interested in discussing the issues that affect seniors in their daily lives. Every meeting also includes representatives who work for and with the senior population in our area. For more information on this program or how to get involved, please call the Senior Help Line at 367-6670.

Volunteers Needed

Illinois Marathon

Volunteer registration has begun for this years’ Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon. Volunteers are most needed for the Course Team. Course Team volunteers monitor intersections, make sure runners are on the right course, and give encouragement and support runners. Training is available for this position and all Course Team volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Other Marathon volunteers help run expo booths, greet guests, keep runners hydrated, time runners, provide information and supplies, and do all other odd jobs that are needed on race day that support thousands of runners and guests. Volunteer training begins April 9 and times, dates, and locations of trainings will vary on volunteer position. Learn more and sign up to help now!

Empty Tomb

Empty Tomb works hard to provide help to anyone who may be in need of it. Volunteers at Empty Tomb sort clothing for distribution, help sort food items for food bank distribution, and offer their handiwork skills to do odd jobs for folks who cannot afford assistance or do not have the know-how. Other volunteers assist in the office, greet patrons, and collect the many donations that go to Empty Tomb each day. To learn more about the program and how you can help, see their website.

This years’ Boneyard Creek Community Day event and cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 14 from 9:00 a.m.–Noon. All volunteers must either check in at Douglas Park or one of the other cleanup sites in Champaign-Urbana. Volunteers are asked to bring their own water bottles and to dress appropriately, (closed-toed shoes and long pants are highly recommended). It is also important that all volunteers register in advance and online, and may do so here.
