The Chambana Volunteer July 21-27

SPOTLIGHT ON AN ORGANIZATION:

Community Center for the Arts

The Community Center for the Arts (C4A) offers programs to people of all ages to become empowered by expressing themselves through creative outlets, such as music. The C4A hosts a variety of musical classes for adults and children, creative summer camps, visual arts courses, and the highly successful Bow-Dacious String Band program for youths. Volunteers for the C4A support these programs and promot the well-roundedness of individuals in our community, particularly youth. The C4A is currently in need of an office assistant, a day camp assistant, as well as an assistant to the Bow-Dacious String Band. Friendly individuals who like to work with children are a must, as well as those whom have experience with organizing events and groups. For more information on how to volunteer, please contact Tina Hope at 217-384-5150 or twhope@gmail.com.

Champaign School District

C-U One to One Mentors must be community based adults, willing to commit to spending 1 hour a week, during the school day, on school grounds with a child at a local elementary or middle school.  Mentors are asked to recommit to the same child the following year, hopefully following the child through high school graduation. Mentors spend time playing games with their mentee, talking, setting goals, taking a walk and listening to the child. It is a great way to give back to your community and to learn more about your local public schools. Mentor training takes place in September and early October and again in January and February.  For more information or to request an application, please contact Lauren Smith at smithla@champaignschools.org or 217-351-3722.
