“UI offers to rehire Catholicism prof, ends funding from Newman Center,” July 29, News-Gazette
Kenneth Howell has been offered his job back teaching Catholicism, but from now on the University of Illinois will pay his salary, the UI said Thursday.
He has until Aug. 6 to respond.And the university will dissolve its relationship with the local Newman Center, which for decades has been paying instructors to teach Catholicism under the UI’s religion studies department.

British Petroleum announced Tuesday that it will replace CEO Tony Hayward in October with Robert Dudley, a University of Illinois alumnus.
Raised in Hattiesburg, Miss., Dudley – now 54 – pursued a degree in chemical engineering at the University, according to a BP press release. Edmund Seebauer, head of the chemical and biomolecular engineering department, said the department revels in Dudley’s success.

The first full day of deliberations for the jury in the corruption trial of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich came and went Thursday without a verdict, not a surprise in such a complex, high-profile case.
In their first communication since deliberations began at midday Wednesday, the six-man, six-woman jury asked in writing for a transcript of only the government’s closing argument from earlier this week.
It’s impossible to read the tea leaves to decipher what that might mean, but it brought objections from the defense and smiles to the faces of prosecutors.
