PYGMALION announces full lineup: Here’s what to expect this year

PYGMALION returns September 22-24, and the festival has just announced their lineup. Once again featuring music and literature, as well as THINK and The Made Fest, PYGMALION is bringing some exciting names to C-U. Here’s a closer look at the schedule and some of the noteworthy guests. The full schedule and lineup can be found on PYGMALION’s website here.

Joanne Lee Molinaro

Nicknamed “The Korean Vegan,” Joanne Lee Molinaro has quickly become a household name. She is a New York Times best-selling author, who in 2020 began making TikTok videos of the vegan Korean food she would make. The videos very quickly took off, and Molinaro now has over four million fans across social media, with three million on TikTok alone. Her videos are special as not only does she “vegan-ize Korean food,” but she also shares stories of her Korean heritage and family.

Petey

Petey is a musician who also happened to blow up on TikTok, due to his quirky sense of humor and odd skits. He has over a million followers on the platform, and millions more views on his videos. His music, however, is a unique blend of indie rock, emo, and electro-pop that is infectious and catchy. His set at Pygmalion will no doubt be filled with some hilarious moments and danceable tunes.

Lido Pimienta

I only recently discovered Lido Pimienta a few months ago, and was instantly drawn in and obsessed. The Colombian singer won the Polaris Music Prize in 2017 for her album La Papessa, and in 2020 she released her second album Miss Colombia. Her sound is a stunning blend of synthpop and electronic combined with typical Afro-Colombian styles. Check out her performance of “Nada” here.

Tamino

I happened to watch Tamino’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert out of the blue months ago and was absolutely mesmerized. The Belgian-Egyptian singer swooped in with his smooth voice, singing over his guitar with a piano backing him up. A song later, Colin Greenwood of Radiohead joins on bass. Tamino’s guitar tone, voice, and songwriting give major Jeff Buckley vibes, but his music stands on its own and cannot be compared. His new single “The First Disciple” sees him playing lute as he croons over meticulous finger picking. He’s one to catch this year.

Misterwives

Misterwives was a group that I had heard of, but never explored until now, and after checking them out, I get the hype. They’ve toured with groups such as Walk the Moon, Bleachers, Twenty One Pilots, Paramore, and more. They play a blend of indie rock, electronic, alternative, and dance. Their music is just plain fun, catchy, and exciting. Check out their newest single “Where Do We Go From Here?” and you’ll see what I mean.

Vieux Farka Touré

Malian-born guitarist Vieux Farka Touré plays African fingerstyle guitar, but is also a very talented singer as well. In 2010 he performed at the opening ceremonies of the FIFA World Cup, and has since released quite a few albums, collaborated with Dave Matthews, Idan Raichel, and just announced a collaborative album with Khruangbin. His playing is as impressive as it is beautiful and expressive.

Mia P Manansala

Mia P Manansala is an author and native Chicagoan, known for her books Arsenic and Adobo and its sequel Homicide and Halo-Halo. She has a new book Blackmail & Bibingka out on October 4th, which she’ll be promoting during her visit with us in September. She has won numerous awards including the 2022 RUSA Reading List for Mystery, the 2021 Agatha Award for Best First Novel, and the 2018 Hugh Holton Award to name a few.

These are just a select few of the great guests joining PYGAMLION this year. Check out the full lineup on the poster below, or on PYGAMLION’s website where you can purchase tickets and view the schedule. PYGMALION runs September 22-24.
