For some of us, Christmas and holiday spirit bursts forth when that first snowflake hits the ground. Or maybe you consider it tacky to listen to Christmas songs before Thanksgiving. According to Champaign Center Partnership (CPP), “The holiday season can’t begin until Santa makes his way through the streets of Downtown Champaign.” Luckily, the Christie Clinic Parade of Lights is this Saturday, November 28th, falling after the first snowfall and Thanksgiving. I also have it on good authority that Santa will be in attendance. Erin Lippitz, the Director of CCP, was looking out for us.
Formerly planned and organized by the Champaign Park District, the Parade of Lights came under the jurisdiction of CCP five years ago. The parade this weekend will be the 15th Annual Parade of Lights to travel through downtown Champaign and the first with a title sponsor, Christie Clinic. “They’ve [Christie Clinic] been a huge part of the planning and organization of this year’s event and have been incredibly involved,” says Lippitz. With about 30-40 float entries in the parade every year and an estimated 2,000 attendees, Lippitz is no doubt thankful for the help in planning this event.
One thing that makes this event so special each year is the theme. Those planning on attending this year’s will be dazzled and awed by floats decked out in accordance with this year’s theme: On the Silver Screen. All entries, no matter their size, shape, or type are required to have lights on them. Those hoping to win one of the awards judged prior to the parade will have to go above and beyond to take home a ribbon. Three separate awards will be given for: Best Use of Theme, Best Use of Lights, and Committee Favorite. Though only three floats will take home a ribbon, Lippitz says great floats, “make the audience, especially the kids, smile.” And while floats are a staple in every parade, businesses, organizations, and families are welcome to participate by simply walking and throwing candy. Though the entry deadline for this year has passed, do not miss out on a chance to engage in the festivities for the 16th Annual Parade of Lights.
While the Christie Clinic Parade of Lights is a wonderful event, it is expensive. Paid for solely with CCP’s marketing budget, attendees will enjoy wonderful decorations, pre-parade entertainment including carolers and hot cocoa, and more. CCP even pays the police officers that give up their evening to ensure the community’s safety. Therefore, for the past few years, there has been an optional entry fee. This year’s fee, $35, goes directly to paying for the event and making it special. CCP is committed to putting on a great show that is, “special to the community because it’s become a tradition and the official holiday kickoff,” says Lippitz.
Before the parade begins at 6 p.m., head to downtown Champaign for the pre-parade festivities at 5pm and enjoy hot cocoa, caroling, and listening to local musicians. The Christie Clinic Parade of Lights is sure to be another great success, concluded by the lighting of the Downtown Christmas Tree in the One Main Plaza, sponsored by Busey. From start to finish, from hot cocoa to Christmas tree lighting, you will not be able to help being filled with Christmas cheer.
