I just want to be OK today
Open me up and you will see
I’m a gallery of broken hearts
I’m beyond repair, let me be
And give me back my broken parts
I can’t seem to get this song by Ingrid Michaelson out of my head. Its repetitive lyrics and catchy spirit firmly root in my head. Why does this apply to a preview of best-selling author, Jennifer Weiner‘s visit to the Champaign Public Library this Sunday? Wish I could tell you.
Weiner has a new book out, Fly Away Home. As with most of her stories, this one promises to be a study in human nature, an exploration of the relationships that shape our lives. But why, when I think of this event, do I find myself singing Michaelson’s song? Reading Weiner’s books is an escape from reality in some ways, and like a reunion with your best friend in others. Somehow this song’s sentiment weaves its way into many of the story lines of Weiner’s books. We just want to be okay, feel today, know that we will be okay today.
Weiner’s characters are a collection of bruised and broken individuals that make up a team of the underdog heroes we all root for. They face important issues and obstacles in our culture today. Though she’s often labeled a “chick lit” author, Weiner has surprisingly well-developed characters. They are stripped bare, exposed for all the insecurities, vulnerabilities, and flawed traits they possess. Weiner tackles body image issues, fractured family relationships, the struggles of parenting, and the wounds of childhood in a laugh-out-loud, tongue in cheek style. And sometimes, just like the characters in her stories, we collect our own broken parts and hope that we will be okay today.
Pick up her latest title at the library, along with tickets for her appearance this Sunday, July 25th. Weiner will present to the public at 2:00 p.m. and sign books following. Don’t miss this chance to hear a best-selling author speak about her inspirations and her upcoming projects. For more information.
