Afro-Brazilian Dance Workshop, Dance at Illinois, 907 W. Nevada, 6-7 p.m., free
This weekend is the 16th Annual International Capoeira Angola Conference at UIUC, and this is one way to be involved. Silvana Marquina will be leading a free class for all ages and ability levels. Throw on some comfortable clothes, check your inhibitions at the door, and learn something new. (JM)
Eurydice, Urbana High School Cobb Auditorium, 7 p.m., $5/ticket
Urbana High School offered an acting class for the first time this fall, and their production of Eurydice features students from this class, as well as a student director. They’re also having all seating on the stage, to give it a more intimate, black-box feel, which I think is really cool. They’re doing a classic tale, in a new exciting way and it’s something you should definitely check out. (KF)
Frontier Folk Nebraska, William Matheny, The Loose Cobra, free, suggested donation $5, 9 p.m.
Frontier Folk Nebraska come back through the area after performing at PYGMALION a couple of years back. Only this time, they will be in nearby Tolono, playing at the Loose Cobra with William Matheny. (PS)
SATURDAY, March 10th
Resist 2.0, Independent Media Center, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., free admission
Here’s your chance to support local artists and local causes at the same time! There’ll be pieces from over 70 artists and makers for sale, and at least 50% of sales will be donated to local organizations: Black Lives Matter CU, Courage Connection, Independent Media Center, Three Spinners and R.A.C.E.S. There will also be live music, a bake sale, and plenty of people to meet and chat with. (KF)
Bones Jugs, The Iron Post, $8, 9 p.m.
Bones Jugs have been kinda quiet as of late, but they find themselves at a very familiar spot — Urbana’s Iron Post — on Saturday night. This would be a fun one for the weekend, no question. (PS)
SUNDAY, March 11th
Bubbles, Brunch, and Boardgames, Broadway Food Hall in Urbana, cost varies (event free, food isn’t)
Here’s something different. On Sunday, get to the Broadway Food Hall in downtown Urbana to grab some brunch and play boardgames created by C-U people. It’s part of CUDO Plays, a boardgame competition sponsored by the Champaign-Urbana Design Organization. This is probably not how your Sunday mornings usually start, and you should check it out to try something new and support the local creatives. (DT) Photo from broadwayfoodhall.com
