The line was long yesterday for the mash up event for Baldarotta’s Porketta & Sicilian Sausage and Smith Burger food truck. In the parking lot of Riggs, people waited to try the one of a kind smash burgers with an Italian twist.

The Smith Burger food truck is known for their smash burgers with fun toppings like macaroni, bacon, and onion rings, and Baldarotta’s is famous for huge meaty, flavorful sandwiches. Together, they teamed up to create three artisan burgers for the Sunday afternoon cash-only event.

I ordered the Lady Della ($16), a double smash burger topped with pistachio mortadella, burrata, Fontina, and pesto on a brioche bun dusted with crushed pistachios. Oh, and a side of fries because come on, garlic parm fries for $2? I’m in.

I ordered my burger from the green food truck and paid cash. I drove home to enjoy it, and the aroma of the basil pesto filled my car. This burger was unlike anything else I’ve ever eaten. Just lifting up the burger made the burrata burst, and soft, milky cheese dripped on the fries and my hands. Burrata is my favorite cheese, so I wasted none of it: dragging the hot fries through the pools of burrata.

Just gaze upon this beauty of a burger. That first bite of burrata explosion together with the meaty patties, salty mortadella sliced thin, and the herby pesto was nothing short of incredible. The burger was layered: pesto, patty, mortadella, Fontina, patty, mortadella, burrata, pesto. The pistachio crunch on the brioche reminded me of the gelato brioche I’ve had at Baldarotta’s (same brioche bun, the same crushed pistachios but with chocolate and caramel gelato inside). Clearly, brioche and pistachio is a winning combination no matter what you pair it with.
This burger was fantastic, and the amount of people lined up to try these special burgers show that this is a novelty that the people in C-U want to eat.
Make sure you’re following both restaurants on social media here for Baldarotta’s and here for Smith Burger.
