Next week marks the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht. On November 9th, 1938, “rioters destroyed hundreds of synagogues, many of them burned in full view of firefighters and the German public and looted more than 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses and other commercial establishments. Jewish cemeteries became a particular object of desecration in many regions. Almost 100 Jewish residents in Germany lost their lives in the violence.”
In recognition, Illini Hillel is providing an “immersive Holocaust Museum experience” at the Cohen Center for Jewish Life at 503 E John Street. It will contain components of Israeli Holocaust Museum Yad Vashem’s exhibit, “The Holocaust – How Was It Humanly Possible?” as well as stories from local holocaust survivors and families.
The museum experience will include an overview given by a facilitator prior to entrance as well as a debrief at the end. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., November 8-11. Individuals and groups should sign up for a time slot here.
