Planning for the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail is underway

A committee of 29 community stakeholders, led by co-chairs Angela M. Rivers and Barbara Suggs-Mason, is planning for a trail that celebrates African American history in Champaign County. There will be stops in Homer, Broadlands, Champaign-Urbana, Rantoul, and on the U of I campus.

An official opening is slated for June 2022, and there are plans for a bus tour, traveling exhibit, and comprehensive website.

For now, you can preview the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail here, as well as donate to the cause and share a story, person, building, or event you think should be added to the project.
