This past weekend in C-U, record stores celebrated Record Store Day 2018.
EXILE ON MAIN STREET
The first person in line at Exile on Main Street in Downtown Champaign arrived at 2 a.m., he was on the hunt for the Johnny Cash set At Folsom Prison, which you can check out below. Mike Ingram was giving people in line numbers, taking their requests ahead of the opening. Mike and Exile owner Jeff Brandt were picking the requests ahead of opening and saving them for the people in line. A bunch of local artists performed inside and outside of the store.
RECORD SWAP
Record Swap in Midtown had a limited selection of Record Day releases. The owner did not recall what his first sale was by the time I arrived to check it out. This was my first time at Record Swap — I was amazed at the amount of inventory, and the owner told me I was only seeing about half of it.
SEE YOU CD & VINYL
See You CD & Vinyl had a shorter line of people — I did not get there in time for a photo of the line — and the first person lined up at 4 a.m. They were there to snag Rage Against the Machine’s Democratic National Convention 2000. Though a very small space, the very friendly owner wanted us to mention that he is moving the store to the old Pizza M space, and will have a grand reopening on May 4th.
