“Taking on big tech: New paradigms for new possibilities” is the theme for Beckman’s 2022 SmithGroup lecture, and it will feature MacArthur Foundation Fellow Safiya Noble. Noble received her Master’s and PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, and is now a professor of gender studies and African American studies at the UCLA, and co-founder and co-director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.

The information landscape is rapidly shifting as new demands increase investment in digital technologies. Yet, critical scholars continue to demonstrate how many technologies are shaped by and infused with values that are not impartial, disembodied, or lacking positionality. Technologies hold racial, gender, and class politics. In her talk, Safiya Noble will share new insights from her bestselling book, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, and posit emerging work that explores the impact of commercial technologies on the public.
