Back in November, we learned that the Thomasboro school board was kind of maybe thinking about asking people to vote on removing a racist mascot. Well reader, after an hour of public comment, last night the board voted 4-3 to retain Indians as their mascot. According to reporting from WCIA, those wanting to keep the racist mascot felt that the caricature of an Native American person could be used to “educate people as well as showcase and honor Native American culture.”
I know this news comes as a shock, since Thomasboro seems to be known for championing progressive values.
It’s great that students will continue to have a robust curriculum on Native American culture, focused around their school mascot.
