This weekend will be the culmination of a process that began in 2015, to make Middle Fork River Forest Preserve a Dark Sky Park. They now have the official designation from the International Dark Sky Association and they are ready to celebrate with a dedication ceremony on June 1st beginning at 6 p.m.
Middle Fork is the only Dark Sky Park in Illinois, and one of only about 60 in the world. You can read more about the process of obtaining this designation here. From the press release:
An IDA International Dark Sky Park is a land known for its exceptionally high quality starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, and cultural heritage, as well as its public enjoyment. Middle Fork River Forest Preserve joins an exclusive but growing list of certified IDA International Dark-Sky Parks.
The celebration with begin with a few words from supporters and those involved with the project, and a dedication of their new official sign, then the fun will continue until midnight.
