“Read Between the Legs: She’s In There,” also referred to as the “Gallery Director’s Show” is a combination of Emily Denis’s Senior Thesis Show for her BFA in Painting at the University of Illinois, a social awareness and fundraiser for R.A.C.E.S (Rape Advocacy, Counseling, and Educational Services) of Urbana, and a going away show for Casey Loving, the current director, who is leaving for the Peace Corps in March.
The show comes from a shared appreciation of women and concern with women’s rights and ownership of their bodies. It is going to encompass a large installation dreamt up and planned by Emily and Casey. The primary emphasis of the show beyond this is a curation of and collaboration with other artists who make work having to do with a woman’s relationship to her body based on issues imposed on her by the broader society: sexual assault, violence, media, sexual identification, etc., and a reclamation of her body through a V-Day-like celebration.
