Travis Hocutt is a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston. In his most recent project, The moon isn’t far enough he appropriates images taken by NASA’s Mars Rovers and translates them into new images using the same photographic processes used originally to document the American West. The works in this show investigate the concept of exploration and the role of photography as a mediator to our understanding and interpretation of the world around us.
Travis works with many antique photographic mediums including Wet-Plate Collodion, Tintype, and Albumen. Examples of each process are included in the exhibition. Travis also teaches workshops in several of these processes. He also works with other mediums such as sculpture, bookmaking, and video. Rather than dedicating himself to one single medium, Travis selects a medium or several mediums that will best support each project. All of his projects, the most recent included, engage philosophical ideas of the barrier between the world and our perceptions of it.
EvilHasATwin consists of Chad Mowbray, a solo bassist currently living in Chicago. The music tends to be somewhat abstract and jazzy and tries, as a tone poem, to evoke an emotional landscape. Though deliberately sparing in repetition, a looping pedal is often used to create a platform for a more complex sonic experience. Some influences (both direct and indirect) include: Michael Manring, Victor Wooten, Phillip Glass, Henryk Gorecki, and Dead Can Dance.
