Illinois Democrats have proposed a new congressional district map that would place all but a tiny portion of Champaign-Urbana into a new district extending southwest to the Mississippi and the Metro-East portion of the St. Louis metropolitan area. This new district would encompass the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University, the University of Illinois at Springfield, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, as well as Millikin University and Illinois Wesleyan. The vote on the propsed changes is expected this week.

Interestingly, Rep. Tim Johnson’s subdivision would be part of the sliver of C-U that gets shifted to District 15 in the above map, ruining my plans for a Hirschfeld-Johnson congressional race.
