The Celebration Company at The Station Theatre has announced auditions for its first show of the summer: Superior Donuts, by Tracy Letts. The play will run June 6 through 15 and will be directed by Thom Schnarre.
Audition Dates are May 11 and 12, 4 to 6 PM, at the Station Theatre. Nine culturally diverse role will be cast (7 men, 2 women, ages 18 to 60+). Auditioners will be given sides from the script to be read cold.
The play focuses on the relationship between despondent Arthur Przybyszewski, a former 1960s radical who owns a rundown donut shop in Uptown, Chicago, and Franco, his energetic but troubled young African American assistant who wants to update the establishment with lively music and healthy menu options, all while writing the “great American novel.”
The play, originaly directed by Tina Landau, was performed at the Downstairs Theatre in Chicago by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
The Broadway production (also directed by Landau) officially opened with Michael McKean as Arthur Przybyszewski and Champaign-Urbana’s own Jon Michael Hill as Franco.
Despite its limited run on Broadway, Superior Donuts has been produced by many regional theatres.
