Got an old TV, computer monitor, or other electronic items not being used anymore? Area residents are invited to bring old or unwanted electronic items to the upcoming Countywide Residential Electronics Collection to have these items responsibly recycled or refurbished. Teams of community service volunteers will be on hand to unload electronic items from residents’ vehicles. No fees will be collected from residents. The collection will take place Saturday, April 11th, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Parkland College Campus, Parking Lot M-4, located at 2400 W. Bradley Avenue, Champaign. Participants will access the collection from the intersection of Duncan Road and Bradley Avenue.
Electronics to be accepted at the April 11th Countywide Residential Electronics Collection will include: televisions of any size, computers, laptops, monitors, home entertainment electronic items (VCRs, Betamax, DVD players, cassette players, Blue Ray players, 8-track players, turntables, etc.), office electronic equipment (printers, scanners, copiers, etc.), communication devises, rechargeable batteries, battery chargers and adapters, and surge strips.
If a television or monitor doesn’t work — that’s fine, and those will be accepted at the collection. However, if a television or monitor is disassembled or dismantled, or if the glass screen of a cathode-ray-tube television or monitor is cracked or broken, those items will not be accepted at the collection.
Most electronic items contain metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury that are harmful to the environment unless responsibly managed. As of January 1, 2012, no person or business may dispose of these specified electronic items banned from Illinois landfills: televisions; monitors; printers; computers (laptop, notebook, netbook, tablet, desktop); electronic keyboards; facsimile machines; videocassette recorders; portable digital music players; digital video disc players; video game consoles; servers; scanners; electronic mice; digital converter boxes; cable receivers; satellite receivers; digital video disc recorders.
Parkland College, Champaign County, City of Urbana, City of Champaign, and Village of Savoy are supporters of the 2015 Countywide Residential Electronics Collections.
Advanced Technology Recycling will handle and process all electronics items collected.
The April 11th Countywide Residential Electronics Collection provides a means to educate the public about the local options available to recycle or refurbish electronic items. “We get the word out about all known convenient and no-cost local options available to residents to responsibly recycle electronics items,” said Susan Monte, Sustainability Coordinator at the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission.
Information about the upcoming collection is available on the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) website at www.ccrpc.org.
