There are plenty of places to get a good, solid hamburger in town. Obviously the bar in Downtown Champaign has been set quite high by Farren’s. But what about on campus?
Joe’s Brewery has half-priced burgers a few days a week, and I’m going to be honest, in the past that’s kind of the only reason I’ve rolled over there for a hamburger. That’s no longer the case though.
I went to Joe’s a few Tuesdays ago and was greeted with a menu that included the new Summer Special section. In it was a burger called the Triple B Burger that was topped with both bacon and brisket and a mustard BBQ sauce. It sounded like something that would be dynamite at a certain local BBQ joint — it was an unexpected feature on the Joe’s menu.
Obviously, I ordered the giant pile of meat on a bun and was greeted with a burger I’d rank up there with the best of them in town. Seriously. The mustard BBQ sauce was worth it alone — the sauce that didn’t stay on the burger was perfect for dipping fries in.
The brisket was an outstanding addition that worked as a great complement to the bacon and hamburger meat. It was the perfect amount of the smokey, tender topping. The only qualm, I suppose, is that the slices were a little on the thick side which made the sandwich a bit messy.
Today is Tuesday and burgers are half price at Joe’s. If you’re able, you should make a plan to get this burger in your face before the Summer Special menu is gone.
