A statue that was constructed in 1887 by French sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet makes its illustrious return to the trails of nearby Allerton Park in Monticello after a three-decade absence.
The statue, which has previously spent some time at Krannert Art Museum on campus, was installed secretly without fanfare, leading to a very surprising addition to the park’s Orange Trail over the past month.
I’d like to give a tip of my hat to whoever decided to release this secretly, à la Beyoncé. Surprises are fun, especially when they have an interesting historical component.
