Champaign County Young Dems To Host First Urbana Mayoral Debate 

Debate will take place Wednesday, January 25th from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Brookens Administrative Center

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – On Wednesday, January 25th, the Champaign County Young Democrats will host a debate of the Democratic candidates for mayor of Urbana. 

The Democratic primary election for Urbana mayor is February 28th, and this will be the first debate for the race. There are three Democratic candidates running for mayor of Urbana. Incumbent Urbana mayor Laurel Prussing and Urbana Alderwoman Diane Marlin have confirmed attendance. The third candidate, Rev. Evelyn Burnett Underwood, has been invited but has not yet confirmed her participation.  

The debate, which is open to the public and media, will take place from 5:30pm to 7pm in the Lyle Shields Room of the Brookens Administrative Center, 1776 E. Washington Street in Urbana. The debate moderators will be Matthew Duco and Diya Tahiliani, both members of the Young Dems’ executive board. Questions can be submitted via email (mattduco@gmail.com), via twitter (@DucoLaw), or via Facebook (@CCYDems). Questions can also be submitted by anyone who attends the debate in person. 

The Young Dems were formally organized in December 2013 and is a growing group of Champaign County residents forty-five years and younger who actively work to encourage youth involvement in political action and help to elect democrats. We also support our community and our members’ diverse community efforts outside the Young Dems. We regret to announce that the previously scheduled debate of the Democratic candidates for Urbana mayor is being cancelled.

All of our efforts have been focused very much in making Saturday’s Women’s March successful and safe. We are pleased with our work, but we have not put the planning and attention into the debate that it deserves. Plus, we are very, very tired.

We will work with the three candidates on the possibility of rescheduling it. We apologize for this inconvenience.
