Hinamatsuri, known as “Girl’s Day” or a Japanese Doll Festival is a holiday celebrated every spring in Japan, and this year the celebration makes its way to Urbana, courtesy of the University of Illinois’ Japan House.
The event, which will take place on Saturday, March 4th, will feature a special tea time for kids, as well as multiple craft sessions. For more information, including ticket links, check out the press release below:
Celebrate the traditional Japanese holiday of Girls’ Day or Hinamatsuri (Japanese doll festival) at Japan House. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony for children 12 and under and a special Girls’ Day craft session will be offered. Two tea times are available, with one overlapping craft session to learn origami and ikebana (Japanese floral arranging). Children 12 and under are $10 for the tea ceremony and accompanying craft session. Adults accompanying the children (tea ceremony only) are $6. There will be displays of traditional Hinamatsuri dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in the traditional court dress of the Heian era (794-1185). All participants will also receive a take home Japanese sweet! Times are 1:00 to 2:15 pm, and 1:45 to 3:00 pm.
At 3:30 we will offer a special Girls’ Day tea for University of Illinois students for $8. Students will receive a bowl of matcha tea and a sweet during the tea ceremony and will have the opportunity to view, and take pictures with, the display of Hinamatsuri dolls.
