Boneyard Creek Community Day happening this Saturday

We all love the Boneyard Creek – it’s a rare natural landmark in Champaign-Urbana, and a vital stream that cuts through some of the busiest parts of town. With this, of course, comes a fair amount of run-off, litter and undesirable pollutants taking up our creek.

Luckily, the 12th annual Boneyard Creek Community Day is coming up this Saturday, which seeks to improve the Boneyard with the power of volunteers.

For information on how you can help to clean the creek on Saturday, check out the description below:

Boneyard Creek Community Day Volunteers Help Protect Local Waterways

CHAMPAIGN, IL – Used tires, obsolete furniture, broken cell phones, soda cans, glass bottles, and cigarette butts are just some of the items removed from clean-up sites by volunteers during the annual Boneyard Creek Community Day.

This year’s event is Saturday, April 29, clean-up work begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon. Afterward, lunch will be served at Scott Park, where there will be music and interactive learning displays. Individuals of all ages can participate, and locations vary from those with projects in the creek to ones more suitable for children.

Last year more than 500 volunteers cleaned up local waterways, picking up 52 cubic yards of litter from a 1,460-acre area. Additionally, teams cleaned 7.5 miles of shoreline and 7 acres of invasive species from designated areas.

Helpers also installed 30 new storm drain awareness medallions on inlets in Urbana.
