Josh Whitman, the athletic director at Illinois, has an incredible way with words. That was on display earlier this year when he had to make the hard, but understandable, choice to let Men’s Basketball coach John Groce go.
Today, he’s penned an open letter to all UIUC alumni and devoted fans, and it hits all the right notes. His position is sound. It strikes the reader as he intended it to:
Once, he felt differently, and now, as a result of listening to a long-silenced minority of people, he has changed his mind, and changed his opinion.
As such, the University is changed. And for the better.
